Community leaders, civic organizations, and leading companies in Brooklyn’s fastest growing districts support efforts to connect a greener, stronger, healthier Brooklyn.
BROOKLYN, NY: On Thursday, November 15, 2018, community leaders, civic organizations, and leading companies in Brooklyn’s fastest growing districts will celebrate collective successes and push for the timely completion of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway at the 6th annual Greenway + Industry benefit supporting Brooklyn Greenway Initiative (BGI). Greenway + Industry will take place from 6:30pm until 11:00pm in the beautiful ballroom of The Williamsburg Hotel in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Greenway + Industry benefits Brooklyn Greenway Initiative, the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to the development, establishment and long-term stewardship of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. When complete, this protected and landscaped route for pedestrians, bicyclists, and families will provide critical connectivity to Brooklyn’s storied and iconic waterfront, parks and open space, commercial corridors, and cultural hubs for 2.65 million Brooklyn residents, over 600,000 private sector employees in Brooklyn, and 15 million visitors from across the City and around the world.
BGI will honor NYC Ferry operated by Hornblower with the 2018 Waterfront Connections Award for their extraordinary contributions to increased mobility, access, and connectivity for traditionally underserved communities throughout New York City where jobs and housing are growing rapidly. Comprised of six routes – Rockaway, East River, Astoria, South Brooklyn, Soundview, and the Lower East Side – NYC Ferry has served more than 7 million riders since launching in May 2017.
BGI will also officially welcome its first Executive Director, Terri Carta, as she presents a future vision of growth toward realizing the full potential of the completed Greenway to connect a greener, stronger, healthier Brooklyn.
Greenway + Industry will feature tastings from some of Brooklyn’s finest food and drink purveyors. Participating restaurants include Baba’s Pierogies, Black Iron Burger, La Loncheria BK, Mazzat, and The Saint Austere. A variety of wines have been provided by Communal Brands and Rooftop Reds; beer by Coney Island Brewery and Sixpoint Brewery, and craft cocktails by Wandering Barman. In addition, guests can learn about Mexican spirits with tastings of Peloton De La Muerte Mezcal, Mezcales De Leyenda, and Fabriquero Sotol.
A Dessert, Drinks & Dancing young professionals’ party from 8:30pm – 11:00pm will round out the evening. Featured sweet treats are being provided by Margaret Palca Bakes, Nine Cakes, Steve’s Authentic Keylime Pies, and Li-Lac Chocolates. DJ T.O.N.Y. will have guests dancing into the night.

About Brooklyn Greenway Initiative:
BROOKLYN GREENWAY INITIATIVE (BGI) is the 501c3 non-profit organization committed to the development, establishment and long-term stewardship of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. When complete, this protected and landscaped route for pedestrians, bicyclists, and families will provide critical connectivity to Brooklyn’s storied and iconic waterfront, parks and open space, commercial and cultural corridors, and new innovation and tech hubs for 2.65 million Brooklyn residents, over 600,000 private sector employees in Brooklyn, and 15 million visitors from across the City and around the world.
Founded in 2004, BGI works with community, non-profit, business, and governmental partners to create and fulfill a comprehensive vision for the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway, while at the same time building awareness and support among residents and employees who live and work along its route. Since its founding, BGI has channeled more than $218 million in public and private investment toward implementation of the Greenway, leveraged public and private investment of $2.38 million toward the creation of the Naval Cemetery Landscape as a new parklike space adjacent to the Greenway, and conceptualized or supported the development and stewardship of other open spaces and public amenities along the Greenway.
Completed Greenway segments are actively used by tens of thousands of cyclists and pedestrians daily. Four new segments are currently under construction and two additional segments are fully funded and slated to break ground in 2019. BGI and its partners continue to advocate for the timely completion of the waterfront route and further development and establishment of a broad network of greenways throughout the borough.
In addition to BGI’s role in community visioning and planning the Greenway, it acts as maintenance partner to NYC DOT for select Greenway segments as they’re implemented. Greenway cleaning and maintenance is funded through corporate and community sponsorships in BGI’s Adopt-A-Greenway program, launched in 2016 as the first municipal greenway sponsorship program of its kind in the country.
BGI hosts numerous volunteer opportunities and public events throughout the year that engage more than 3,000 people of all ages in stewardship activities, public space activation, and education and advocacy for the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway and Naval Cemetery Landscape.
