On July 25th, over 1,400 riders took the 40-mile trip along the waterfront’s edge from Greenpoint to Rockaway Beach, all laced with green Epic Ride wristbands. Our travelers trickled into our Greenpoint start line in groups and before we knew it the Newtown Barge Playground was filled teams of bikes and helmets! In prep for the ride, Brooklyn Roasting Company coffee powered our anxious participants, we could tell it was going to be an active day and it didn’t fall short.
Less than two hours later our first participants broke the finish line barrier and after 11am, the official Epic After Party was underway. We were so happy to see the riders pedal in each and every moment after. The ride was intersected with two rest points at Micro Center and Floyd Bennett Field where refreshments from Sahadis (the best hummus in the world!) and Wholefoods were offered.
We’re so proud of the how the event turned out and the dedication of all the riders who participated. The route traveled along open roads and existing, new and soon to break ground Greenway segments and showcased the potential of a fully completed Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway combined with a completed Jamaica Bay Greenway. Riders ventured through state and national parks, along the Brooklyn Waterfront, waterside neighborhoods, and concluded with a beautiful view of satisfaction at Rockaway Beach.
Everyone was welcomed with live music from New York Brass Band and complimentary Rockaway Brewing Company Beer, until the kegs ran out!
Want to join us for another BGI event? We invite all of our supporters out to the Brooklyn Greenway Half Marathon and 5k happening on October 18th, 2015! Runners will take on a 13.1 mile journey along the waterfront throughout Red Hook and Greenpoint.
A huge thanks to everyone huge joined us for an Epic day!
