Greenway Adventures NYC presented by National Grid Launches

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Summer journey to draw thousands of New Yorkers to explore city’s 5-borough greenway network

New York, NY: Brooklyn Greenway Initiative (BGI) announced today the launch of Greenway Adventures NYC presented by National Grid, a free, self-guided summer event to explore greenways in all five of the city’s boroughs.

BGI worked with more than 15 partners across the city to develop a comprehensive greenway guide featuring more than 24 routes and adventures across all five boroughs. From June 1st to August 31st, participants will use a free digital guide platform that will introduce participants to new transportation and recreation corridors and connected parks and natural spaces across the city, as well as points of interest to explore like vistas, vibrant neighborhoods, food and drink destinations, and cultural events throughout the summer.

“We’re thrilled to bring New Yorkers together to embark on new adventures and rediscover our city this summer,” said Terri Carta, BGI executive director. “Our city’s greenways are unique spaces for people to connect to nature and each other, as well as move around their city safely. Greenway Adventures NYC showcases this essential green infrastructure and the wonders of New York City they provide access to.”

This event is offered for free thanks to the generous presenting sponsorship from National Grid, official transit sponsorship from NYC Ferry, official bicycle sponsorship from Trek Bicycle, and additional support provided by REI, Greenpoint Landing, Kiwi Energy, and Wegmans.

“National Grid is excited to sponsor Greenway Adventures NYC, it’s a great way to spend time outside as the city is reopening,” said Eileen Cifone, National Grid Director for Customer and Community. “Bringing communities together to explore our beautiful environment and open green spaces is an opportunity to truly appreciate nature while also raising awareness on sustaining these precious resources for future generations to enjoy.”

Greenway Adventures NYC is also an opportunity to highlight organizations working on greenways throughout the city and support the efforts of the newly-formed NYC Greenway Coalition to raise awareness and investment into completion of the 400-mile citywide greenway network. More than 15 nonprofit and community partners contributed high-quality routes and adventures to the Greenway Adventures NYC guide.

“New Yorkers embraced the city’s incredible parks, greenways, waterfronts, and open spaces during the past year,” said Jeffery Brault, Director of Public Affairs at City Experiences, operator of NYC Ferry. “NYC Ferry is committed to supporting these important spaces throughout the five boroughs, and we are thrilled to be the official transit sponsor of BGI’s Greenway Adventures NYC so that all New Yorkers can experience the beauty and opportunity of the city’s incredible greenways and waterways.”

“We are so excited to support Brooklyn Greenway Initiative and look forward to introducing riders to New York City’s extensive network of greenways and trails through Greenway Adventures NYC this summer,” said Eric Bjorling, Director of Brand at Trek Bicycle. “We are committed to ensuring people have access to safer cycling conditions and opportunities and making sure that we get as many people as possible on bicycles.”

Greenway Adventures NYC officially launches today. Registered participants gain immediate access to the event’s online guide platform featuring the first 14 greenway adventures, event info, and the ongoing summer activity calendar. Greenway routes are designed for people of all ages and abilities and spread across all 5 boroughs. Additional routes and activities will be released and added throughout the summer.
