NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) has developed a plan to implement greenway treatments on Flushing Avenue as early as July of this year. The plan would make the street one-way for westbound vehicles and create a 2-way bikeway separated from traffic by a divider containing trees and turn lanes for entering the Brooklyn Navy Yard industrial park. Parking lanes on either side of the traffic lane would prevent the street from becoming a speedway. DOT did a thorough analysis of configuration alternatives, which revealed the surprising statistic that the amount of westbound traffic on Flushing Avenue is more than two times the amount of eastbound traffic. See DOT’s presentation on this proposal.
