BGI has secured the balance of funding to construct the Naval Cemetery Landscape, pictured here, with a total of $882,000 in City Council capital funding. The site is on the Williamsburg Street West segment of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway, between Kent and Flushing Avenues and the new landscape will help convert a formerly gritty stretch of the greenway to one of the most beautiful and inviting.

Previously BGI had secured $560,000 from the NYS Environmental Protection Fund and $600,000 from the TKF Foundation as part of a $1 million grant that includes programming and a study to be conducted by NYU of the impact of access to nature on city dwellers visiting the site. Having secured the Council funding, final design has started with a goal of construction in 2014.

The site will be planted exclusively with native grasses, wildflowers, trees and shrubs and is being designed to provide the experience of being completely enveloped in nature.

Letitia “Tish” James took an early interest in the project and made the largest capital contribution. Thanks Tish!
