Gowanus Greenway Connector Letter to New York City Department of Transportation

BGI is working tirelessly to close gaps on the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway to provide Brooklynites with a protected and connected bike network and a safe alternative to private cars and crowded public transit. We sent this letter to NYC Department of Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg calling for the immediate installation of the Greenway on Hamilton Avenue over the Gowanus Canal. We are joined in our request by a coalition of Brooklyn’s elected officials and local community groups who support this vital infrastructure.

We are asking that this critical bike route be implemented with temporary materials as part of NYC’s Open Streets program to help New Yorkers safely get back to work. As bicycle use in New York City continues to grow, the Gowanus segment of Greenway sits at a major crossroads of Brooklyn neighborhoods ill-served by transit. This less-than-1-mile stretch will connect the Greenway to the Smith Street and 4th Avenue bike corridors, to Red Hook, and to the waterfront and will play a vital role in getting our city moving again.
