Welcome aboard, Michael Flynn, the newly-appointed Welcome aboard, Michael Flynn, the newly-appointed commissioner of the NYC Department of Transportation, or DOT 🚲️ 🚌 👟 Collaboration and partnership is at the heart of everything we do to advocate for a well-designed and well-maintained greenway network here in Brooklyn (and with our citywide colleagues as a lead convener for @nycgreenways). In the past, we’ve known Commissioner Flynn to be a well-informed transportation planner and a thoughtful voice in the ongoing conversation about how we move through our city and its boroughs. Here’s to working together to continue to make New York City’s greenway system to support New Yorkers’ needs and an opportunity for ongoing expansion and improvement. 📽️ Newly-appointed DOT commissioner Michael Flynn at the announcement for “Redesign on McGuinness Boulevard.” #greenway #transportation #brooklyn
Look at this particular bend in the Brooklyn Water Look at this particular bend in the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway, and what do you see? Safe paving for those rolling in either direction. Clear markings for pedestrians and those on wheels to navigate one another. Lush landscaping to support a dynamic urban ecosystem. Strategic curbing to protect greenway users from motor vehicles. More of this, please and thank you! #greenway #nyc #brooklyn
New Year, new city-wide leadership, new opportunit New Year, new city-wide leadership, new opportunities for collaboration *but* one thing that remains unchanged is our greenway goal: to create and maintain a well-designed, well-maintained greenway system that connects neighborhoods across the city, and to expand greenway reach into underserved communities. As @nycmayor settles in, we’re reminded of a quiet day in Summer 2025 when then-candidate @zohrankmamdani arrived by bike and made an impromptu visit to the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway and the @navalcemeterylandscape. An outspoken advocate for safe and affordable access to transit and greenspace, we’re looking forward to engaging with the new administration as the visioning work that crystallized in the “Greater Greenways” plan (released in 2025) guides us in 2026. How will we know if goals are being met? How will we track progress and hold decision-makers accountable? Stay tuned, more on that coming very soon ... Congratulations, @nycmayor, and here’s to our common goal: a safe, green-with-life system for New Yorkers of all ages, abilities, incomes, and backgrounds to walk, roll, rest, and enjoy. 📸 Zohran Mamdani with former BGI staffer Sam Brown Beatty at the Naval Cemetery Landscape. #greenway #brooklyn #mamdani
Winter weather has finally arrived at the Brooklyn Winter weather has finally arrived at the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway! No matter the time of year, no matter the weather, greenways are vital connectors and invaluable systems for navigating our city. Please help us continue to advocate for and improve the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway in the New Year with a year-end contribution (link in bio and at brooklyngreenway.org. Fact: Inclement weather only reduces use of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway by an average of ~36%.* Though casual recreation may decrease this time of year, reliance on the greenway for commuting and exercise remains consistent. And our commitment at Brooklyn Greenway Initiative to maintaining and expanding the greenway’s reach remains solid as well. All year long, we focus on three key pillars: (1) Advocating for more connected miles of greenway. (2) Making the greenway green. (3) Engaging people in enjoying greenways. With your support, we can achieve our shared vision for Brooklyn’s Greenways. Please consider a tax-deductible year-end gift to Brooklyn Greenway Initiative. Thank you for investing in making greenways safer, greener, and more accessible across New York City! With gratitude, Hunter Armstrong, Executive Director *According to BGI’s Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway User Study, weather conditions such as extreme cold, heat, rain, snow, and wildfire smoke only reduce greenway usage by about 30% for pedestrians and 42% for cyclists. 📸 Hunter Armstrong, BGI executive director (third from left) with fellow greenway advocates and public officials at the August 2025 announcement of the Greater Greenways plan.
