A Meadow Grows in Brooklyn: The Naval Cemetery Landscape Jane’s Walk

May 3 | 10:00 am - May 5 | 7:00 pm

Jane’s Walk
A Meadow Grows in Brooklyn: The Naval Cemetery Landscape
Jane’s Walk is an annual global festival held the first weekend in May.

Brooklyn Greenway Initiative built and maintains the Naval Cemetery Landscape on the site of the former Naval Hospital Cemetery at the Brooklyn Navy Yard as a place for retreat and remembrance while honoring its rich layers of natural and cultural history. The Naval Cemetery Landscape is a native plant meadow and pollinator habitat, and provides visitors with an escape from urban life.

Jane’s Walk is an annual global festival held the first weekend in May. Jane’s Walk NYC, organized by the Municipal Art Society of New York, is the largest chapter of the festival anywhere in the world. MAS staff organize a fleet of volunteer walk leaders, to create 165+ in-person, virtual, and on-demand walks with over 10,000 participants.

During Jane’s Walk NYC weekend, the simple act of exploring the city is enhanced with personal observations, local history, and civic engagement. Jane’s Walk NYC encourages people to share stories about their neighborhoods, discover unseen aspects of their communities, and connect with visitors and neighbors alike.

As a self-guided walk this year, visitors can pick up a self guided tour brochure at our entrance to learn more about our native meadow, the history of the NCL, and our site’s features. Follow up with our gardeners on-site to dig deeper into our horticultural practices and to share nature observations. Early May is a great time to spot migratory birds, newly emerging perennial plants, and various pollinators buzzing with activity.
